To fill that need, ATS significantly expanded its own in-house technical training program and gained the ability to deliver its educational courses to clients. "In today's industry, you have to be proficient in many different areas," said Gary Carwell, manager of ATS's SkillPoint Outside Training Services. "I tell people in today's workforce their job will change, and they need new skills, but you will always need people to maintain these machines." ATS has been an independent company offering factory maintenance and information technology services since 1985, but the expansion of its training program happened more recently, with the acquisition of technical training firm Learn Maintenance in 2014. That acquisition allowed SkillPoint to become a more mobile platform with access to 300 portable hands-on training stations and dozens of additional course offerings. Today, SkillPoint offers a diverse curriculum with more than 130 courses tailored for different skill levels in areas ranging from plumbing to robotics. Classes are offered at ATS headquarters on North University Street or can be held on-site with clients. In 2016, 98 percent of ATS techs took some form of training. Those technicians and employees of ATS clients logged more than 30,000 hours of SkillPoint training all together. "It's an opportunity for us to get to know our customers a little better," said ATS general manager Richard Pillman. "It's a huge advantage to have us there on the site." And the program is attracting attention from companies that have not previously had a business relationship with ATS, said training administrator Mary Shawgo. "It's not only ATS based," Shawgo said.
